Every small business has a story. This is mine.
It Started with Not Fitting In
As a teenager, I was never what you'd call a "normal size." Finding clothes that actually fitted me on the high street was a constant battle — so I did what any resourceful teenager would do. I started making my own. I followed my favourite pop stars and recreated their looks stitch by stitch, teaching myself as I went. Looking back, that's where it all began.
Making for My Own Children
Years later, when I had children of my own, the sewing machine came back out. I started making clothing for them — and rediscovered my love for fabric all over again. The way a material feels, the way it hangs, the way it moves — it makes all the difference to a finished piece. Fabric has always been my biggest draw, and it still is today.
Sewing for the NHS
Then came lockdown. Like so many people, I wanted to do something useful — so I made scrubs. Hundreds of them, for the NHS and local surgeries. It felt meaningful and purposeful, and I sewed every single day. When they were no longer needed, I found myself missing it terribly.
The Idea That Started Everything
It was my daughter-in-law who suggested I turn my passion into a business — making children's clothing and selling it properly. So that's exactly what I did. And the name? That came from one of my sons. When my children were little, I always called them my sproglets — and he thought Snazzy Sproglets had a certain ring to it. He was absolutely right.
The Shop
For a while, I rented a space in a local shop near me. I worked there, met my customers face to face, and watched people fall in love with the fabrics and the unusual prints. The quality spoke for itself, and I built up a wonderful base of repeat customers — many of whom still order from me today, long after the shop had to close.
It's those customers I am most grateful for. They gave me the confidence to carry on. Without them, I'm not sure I would have.
Where I Am Today
Today, Snazzy Sproglets lives online. I've learned so many new skills along the way — including building my own website, and now, apparently, writing blogs (before today I didn't even know what a blog was!).
I hope that by sharing my story, you get a sense of who is behind Snazzy Sproglets. I'm a real person, trying to make something special — one carefully chosen fabric and one handmade piece at a time. Thank you for being here. It means more than you know. 🌸
